Feeling Burned Out? - [essential version]
Understanding Chronic Stress and Trauma [OTW post date 30 MAR 24]
Today, we’re going to talk about something called burnout. Have you ever felt really tired and not excited about things for a long time?
That might be burnout. It happens when we have too much stress for too many days without a break.
Did you know that stress can get bigger when bad things happen?
Let’s think about when everyone had to stay home because of a sickness called COVID. It was a hard time, and now some people feel burnout because of it.
The World Health Organization said in 2019 that burnout is a real thing that can happen, especially with work. Even before COVID, Deloitte found out that 2 out of 3 adults had some level of burnout.
In 2022, people started to worry more about feeling happy and healthy in their minds than about COVID. Life moves fast, and COVID made it even harder. Many people tried to be strong, but really we lacked enough ways to feel okay. It became harder to have energy to spend time with friends. It became harder to be social. If you understand this, you’re not alone.
In 2023, the surgeon general, (the doctor appointed by the President to identify widespread health concerns), said that feeling lonely is a big problem. (He labeled it a loneliness epidemic.)
To help with too much stress, sad times we haven’t gotten over, and feeling lonely, we need to make more friends and learn new things to do.
